Vinyl Flooring - The Good, Bad & Ugly

The Good

Vinyl floors have, over the years, become a very popular flooring choice in commercial facilities. And, why not? After all, this flooring material is durable, affordable, and easy to install. Moreover, it has a fantastic ability to resist moisture and still gives the effect of luxurious, yet, rustic materials. In fact, it is ideal for heavy foot traffic and even reduces noise and fall impact to a certain extent. No wonder then, that it is part of the ‘Resilient’ flooring system.

The Bad

Typically, only a thin layer of protective coating is applied at point of manufacture and needs frequent stripping and application of a thin layer of a protection. This protection layer is not normally produced by the manufacturer of the vinyl flooring but by third party manufacturers, which can result in incompatibility issues. Bona AB of Sweden, however, has a range of cleaning and protective coatings that can be used and applied to all resilient floor systems.

The Ugly

Over time, the vinyl flooring begins to look quite ugly as the protective coating wears away and buildup of protective layers dull, and the vinyl floor itself becomes discolored. The Bona resilient floor care system quickly brings back the original or new color to the vinyl, and it again becomes attractive. As an added bonus, coating the vinyl floor with a Bona vinyl coating, eliminates the need for future stripping and polishing.

After many years of use customers will want to remove and send the vinyl floor to landfills. This, of course, is not an environmentally friendly practice, but re-coating the floor with Bona resilient floor care system creates a brand-new floor that will last for many, many years. In addition to eliminating the need for future stripping and polishing the floor will be much safer and cleaner given Bona’s TRBA certification.

The gym floor was re-coated and saved from landfill.
