Transport X COVID-19

From seats to floor, from hand rails to arm rests, every element of public transport is more likely to be affected by viruses and bacteria, which may be harmful for the people touching them.

Hygiene, therefore, has always remained one of the top priorities in this sector. With the ever increasing surge in the number of COVID 19 cases in the U.A.E, the hygiene and disinfection regime for public transport has been intensified. Every nook and cranny of a public transport vehicle is carefully disinfected - this includes interiors, seats , floors, doors, railings, handrails, arm rest, ceilings and the exterior.

Here is a lowdown of the disinfection practices being undertaken to ensure the safety of staff and passengers using the public transport services including metros, buses and taxis:

METROS

  • 79 trains and 47 stations are thoroughly cleaned everyday.
  • 700+ workers are deployed to various metro stations.
  • 45 workers over a stretch of 3 hours complete the internal cleaning and intensive sanitisation of each metro cart.
  • The exterior of the metro is cleaned automatically.
  • This is followed by manual internal cleaning and intensive sanitisation.
  • During regular working hours, trains are cleaned every time they complete a journey from Al Rashidiya Station to the UAE Exchange Metro Station.

BUSES

  • A team of 210 workers is involved in the cleaning and sanitization of 1,500 buses.
  • 1,500 buses are cleaned and sterilised everyday.
  • Depending upon its size, it takes approximately 5 to 7 minutes to clean a bus.
  • Disinfectant fogging with a medical grade disinfectant is carried out.
  • Alcohol based hand sanitisers are installed across all public transport buses and bus stations.
  • Latest sterile materials are used to remove bacteria and viruses inside the bus.
  • Stringent supervision is done to ensure all stages of cleaning are properly completed.

TAXIS

  • Over 10,000 taxis are cleaned and disinfected everyday.
  • It takes approximately 10 minutes to clean and disinfect each taxi.
  • Hygiene tests are conducted randomly to assess the levels of contamination.
  • All drivers have been educated about following strict personal hygiene measures.
  • Portable alcohol based hand sanitisers have been given to taxi drivers to ensure their safety and the safety of the passenger.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has also advised all commuters to follow the health and safety guidelines prescribed by the Ministry of Health and Prevention and the World Health Organisation (W.H.O.).
