Steam cleaning: Gaining ground

The hot steam over 140 degree Celsius blowing from cleaning machines is adding value to ‘Green’ concept as it shuns the usage of chemicals. More importantly, it’s catching up in the Middle East region for health reasons. However, the number of steam cleaning service providers is yet to pick up. Vapour steam cleaners are frequently used in hypoallergenic environments because they do not require the use of additional cleaning chemicals. The steam cleaning is very effective and would deliver dry steam to clean and sanitize different surfaces, like floors, kitchen tops, toilets, glass windows, and household articles like ovens and other white goods, sinks, bath tubs, curtains, upholstered items, carpets and mattresses etc.

Steam cleaning is considered to be an effective one to eliminate dust mites from upholstery, pillows and mattresses. Consumers are now coming forward insisting on steam cleaning usage in the Middle East market as clean and hygiene awareness going up by the day. Several western manufacturing companies are producing cleaning appliances or devices that use steam to quickly dry, clean, and sanitize inanimate surfaces. Often the process is effective enough to disinfect or even sterilize the surfaces. The steam is produced in a boiler that heats tap water to high temperatures which results in better indoor air quality and eliminates the need to handle or store cleaning agents. Steam has been shown effective in combating mold, bacteria, viruses, and other forms of bio contamination.

Hotels, corporate companies and high net worth individuals prefer steam cleaning for their valuable carpets. Rather than soaps, the steam-cleaning system uses detergent-based solutions that dry to a powder or crystal. The surface is dried to avoid saturation, typically taking 4-12 hours. Some carpet-cleaning solutions are carbonated to dissolve organic material more effectively.

Comparatively, very few new products are entering the market. The Dubai-based Al Sayegh Brothers in 2012 launched first Palson steam cleaner ‘Skyplus’ with soap dispenser in UAE. Al Sayegh Brothers company distributes international brands from Turkey, Norway, Italy, Spain, Korea, Japan, Switzerland and the UK. The Skyplus steam cleaner supercedes the efficiency and cleaning power of an average steam cleaner due to the inclusion of the soap dispenser and it’s ability to sanitise surfaces and kill bacteria, while cleaning.

Steam cleaning is considered to be an effective alternative to home and commercial cleaning, which is the first of its kind. The market is witnessing new products with different features different from any other steam cleaner available for both home and commercial use. Steam cleaning machines are now equipped with a soap tank with automatic dispensing and disinfecting capabilities.

The cleaner also has a high de-scaling capacity at high temperatures and is equipped with a water heater, low water light monitor and numerous accessories to clean sofas, curtains and floors separately. One can avoid the problems that arise using other cleaning methods such as mop getting dirty, chemical usage, excess water consumption, etc. The steam cleaning ensures quickly dry, clean and sanitising inanimate surfaces. Often the process is effective enough to disinfect or even sterilize the surfaces.

How it works

Steam Cleaning or vapour system as the name itself indicates it involves application of steam for cleaning floors, carpets, mattresses, dirt removing, industrial usage, etc. The steam cleaning equipment comes with a boiler to heat water to high temperatures (240-310F/115-155C) to produce low-pressure (several atmospheres), low moisture (4 to 6 per cent water) water vapour (steam).

The temperature level determines steam’s ability to clean. The steam is applied to cleanable surfaces via a variety of insulated tools and accessories, thereby safely providing the energy needed to break soil bonds and release contaminants into water suspension, after which they can be removed by wiping or vacuuming. Steam cleaning process consumes very little water (usage is measured in quarts per hour) compared to carpet cleaners or other cleaning devices (whose usage is measured in gallons per minute), which use hot water instead of steam and are incorrectly called ‘steam cleaners.
