Early Career

Looking back at my career journey, my path did not actually begin in the Housekeeping department. My very first professional experience was in the pastry kitchen, where I worked for two years before my internal transfer took place. This is a story of how others—my colleagues and the HR team—recognised my potential and invested in my development, helping me grow into the professional I am today. For this, I remain deeply grateful to them to this day.

My journey in hospitality began in 2002 following a classic industry scenario: I started as a room attendant. I had to learn everything from scratch. Mastering standards, quality, speed, precision and resilience were the core skills I needed to refine. Once I had mastered room cleaning and consistently delivered high-quality results, I was cross-trained to cover public areas across all shifts: morning, afternoon, evening, and night.

Driven by my own initiative, I began assisting the supervisor after my regular shifts with room inspections and other operational duties. Shortly after, I received an official promotion to Housekeeping Supervisor. This was my very first career milestone. Over the next five years, I advanced to Assistant Executive Housekeeper, gained hands-on experience in laundry operations, and ultimately progressed to Head of Housekeeping—all within the same property, the Hyatt Regency Bishkek. By 2010, I realised that I was ready to scale new heights, expand my horizons and pursue international opportunities.

My primary motivation has always been self-belief. When you do the work you like, see tangible results, and receive recognition—that is the golden formula for success.

Growth & Learning

Here are the most valuable lessons I have learned throughout my career:

1. Taking initiative is about personal growth It is not about waiting for immediate rewards, nor is it a burden of extra responsibility to avoid. Initiative is a commitment to self-improvement. The reality remains simple: if you do not step up, someone else will.

2. Effective communication is the ultimate key to success If you do not ask the question, you will never get the answer. Proactive communication helps you uncover vital insights and eliminates assumptions, wasted effort, and poor outcomes.

3. Kindness to yourself, your work and others is strength It is a common misconception that kindness equals weakness, and I have encountered many such examples in my life. However, I firmly believe that kindness breeds kindness. It creates an environment where others can grow through your support—and seeing that happen today is incredibly rewarding.

4. Learning is a lifelong, continuous process Professional and personal development never stops; you must always keep learning.

Defining Moments

From early childhood, my mother taught me to keep the house clean and to cook, which was ultimately a lesson in independence. These early skills laid the foundation for the career path I would eventually pursue. I have a natural passion for cleanliness at home. In fact, my friends and colleagues always tell me, "Your place looks exactly like a hotel—everything is perfectly organized, spotless, and tidy." Many of them even followed my example in their own homes.

For me, cleaning has also become a form of mindfulness. Whenever I need to make an important decision, I start cleaning. It relaxes me, restores my energy, and allows me to reflect and find the right answers while doing what I love.

Ultimately, this inherent love for cleanliness and order is exactly what shaped my career path and led me to become a Head of Housekeeping.

Evolution Of Housekeeping

Over the years, I have observed several major shifts in the industry:

· Employee turnover: Retention has become a widespread challenge. Outsourcing is increasingly being considered as a solution to the ongoing retention challenge.

· Streamlined workflows: The integration of specialized apps and software now saves valuable time, eliminates paper consumption, and conserves energy.

· Automation: Routine tasks are increasingly being optimized through machinery and technology.

Despite these changes, the core performance indicators remain unchanged:

· Cleaning and service quality: Maintaining immaculate standards is non-negotiable.

· Guest feedback: Reviews and guest satisfaction continue to drive our success.

From 2000 to 2015, a career in housekeeping carried a significantly higher status. It represented a stable, lucrative income and the prestige of working for a global brand. Back then, that generation worked primarily to earn a living and provide for their families. Today, the younger generation and the modern world are far more focused on lifestyle and work-life balance. They seek easier paths to income and prioritize overall quality of life. As a result, the physically demanding roles of room attendants, stewards, and laundry staff are often viewed today as less prestigious or lacking long-term prospects. However, this is simply how the world evolves; our role as leaders is to anticipate these shifts, take timely action, and adapt quickly.

Leadership, Team Development & Motivation

Team motivation is a critical element of operational success. For many employees, the workplace is essentially a home away from home. We have all heard the Golden Rule: "Treat others the exact way you want to be treated." In a corporate setting, this is not about family dynamics; it is about building a healthy, high-performing team. To drive motivation and professional development, I focus on both workplace and lifestyle initiatives:

· Social and milestone recognition: Celebrating birthdays, work anniversaries, personal milestones, and team victories, alongside casual team gatherings.

· Performance-driven incentives: Departmental competitions focused on cleaning quality and accountability, professional certifications, regular one-on-one check-ins, and clear career development plans.

Combined, all of these elements form a powerful engine that drives operational excellence, fosters professional growth, and transforms daily tasks into valuable career expertise.

Guest Experience

To achieve consistently high guest ratings, I firmly advocate for a personalised approach.

Once again, I return to the premise that effective communication is the key to success. Some guests enjoy conversation and engagement, while others prefer total privacy, wanting the housekeeping process to remain entirely invisible. Managing this is much like a game of chess, where you must anticipate needs and make the right move at the right time.

My core strategy centers on maintaining absolute consistency across three pillars:

· Efficiency and standards: Delivering maximum speed without compromising cleaning quality.

· Operational quality control: Utilizing checklists, specialized software, supervisors, and regular inspections.

· The service culture: Ensuring a welcoming smile, genuine hospitality, and proactive guest communication.

Innovation & Sustainability

As we evolve alongside the world, embracing global sustainability and reducing or eliminating environmentally harmful practices. has become more critical than ever. Just as people increasingly embrace a healthy lifestyle, the hospitality industry is committed to fostering a healthy and sustainable environment.

In this regard, there are three core pillars that demand our focused operational attention:

· Green cleaning: Focusing heavily on minimizing utility consumption, chemical usage, and water waste during linen processing.

· Digital resources: Eliminating paper usage and reducing turnaround times through digital tools.

· Resource management and optimisation: The most complex challenge, where operational teams face staff reductions while still being required to maintain immaculate quality standards.

Cross-Cultural Experience

Throughout my 18-year career, I have had the privilege of working with individuals from diverse cultural and national backgrounds. This has truly been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey. It taught me how to collaborate effectively, respect different cultures, religions, and traditions, and accept people for who they are.

Naturally, a leader must maintain a carefully balanced environment within a diverse department to prevent any feelings of exclusion, bias, or favoritism. Instead, the focus should be on mutually discovering and embracing each other's core values. In my practice, this translates into celebrating national independence days, sharing traditional cuisines, learning languages, experiencing songs and dances, wearing cultural attire, and organizing team-building activities centered on global landmarks and meaningful historical events. Fostering this level of cultural harmony remains one of my most cherished leadership experiences.
