Your impact on housekeeping
Housekeeping is a constantly evolving profession and it has changed massively over the past decades. It has been quite a transformative experience for me personally. With changing times, guest expectations, colleagues' expectations, introduction of newer and superior cleaning methods and chemicals, it was very important to keep up with the changes , demands and expectations.
I have transformed housekeeping in below mentioned ways.
- Elevating guest experience delivery
- Individual development plan for high potential employees
- Increased rooms profitability , Year on year
- Cleaning methodology and introduction of sustainable chemicals
- Digitalization of reports and inspections
The challenges you faced in your housekeeping career
Challenges are a natural part of daily life and to identify and curate solutions is a great way forward. Amongst many challenges two stand out . First is the availability of quality and quantity of manpower required. Housekeeping 60% manning is outsourced and to have trained individuals is not always possible. To overcome this challenge, we need to have a great collaborative relation with the supplier who understands the requirements and is able to deliver by providing attendants who are suitable for daily operations.
Secondly, sourcing suppliers who provide quality amenities in a specific time frame. Many times despite having contracts in place , the supply of desired amenities is delayed hence hindering guest experience. To combat this, we have a robust forecast plan in place which enables us to preorder the long lead-time products.
Your advice to fellow housekeeping professionals
Stay curious, humble and agile. Stay UpToDate with latest industry insights. Engage with guests, stakeholders and collaborate with fellow professionals. Amongst being always busy with tasks in hand, take time to self-reflect and identify what you are doing well and which area needs improvement. This helps clear your mind and stay focused. Don't hesitate to ask for help and offer assistance. Finally, just breathe when things get overwhelming. Afterall, you cannot pour out of an empty vessel.
