Your journey as a woman in the cleaning industry
I have been fortunate enough to work in several countries throughout my career, including Australia, the United Kingdom, Qatar, and the UAE. My journey has been incredibly rewarding, from creating and refining operation plans as a venue cleaning manager in Australia, to working in Dubai at one of the largest exhibitions in the world to date. Along the way, I‘ve been empowered by my peers to excel, develop new skills, and mentor others.
Early on, women rising the ranks was seen as a threat, but that is thankfully changing. At Emrill, half of our executive leadership team are women, and I love working in a team where women are supported and encouraged to succeed.
Gender related challenges in your career
FM is traditionally male-dominated, and women can sometimes be overlooked for certain duties. I’ve never been afraid to say yes and take pride in doing the jobs often associated with men, such as operating machinery. Whether male or female, our aim is to provide service excellence, and each person has their own unique strengths and skills to contribute.
To create an inclusive working environment, be the change you want to see and lead by example. I’ve found that my passion and my willingness to get stuck in has helped me overcome any bias or challenge.
