The Hidden Challenges in Jordan's Facilities Management Sector

Facilities management (FM) is a critical function that involves the management and maintenance of buildings, assets, and services to ensure the efficient and safe operation of a facility. In Jordan, FM is an industry that has been growing rapidly over the past few years, contributing significantly to the economy. However, despite its growth, the FM industry in Jordan faces a host of hidden challenges that threaten its sustainability and effectiveness. In this article, we explore some of these challenges and their implications for the sector.

One of the most significant challenges facing the FM sector in Jordan is the lack of a skilled workforce. Although there is a large pool of labor available in the country, there is a shortage of trained professionals with the necessary technical expertise and qualifications to perform FM tasks. This shortage is particularly acute in specialized areas such as HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems, which require highly trained technicians. The shortage of skilled labor has several consequences, including increased labor costs, longer response times, and decreased quality of service. To address this challenge, the government and private sector stakeholders must invest in training programs and initiatives that can equip Jordanian workers with the necessary skills to excel in the FM industry.

Another challenge facing the FM sector in Jordan is the absence of regulatory standards and guidelines. There is no comprehensive legal framework that governs FM activities in the country, leaving service providers to operate in a regulatory vacuum. This lack of regulation leads to inconsistencies in service quality and pricing, as well as difficulty in resolving disputes. The absence of regulatory standards also contributes to a lack of transparency in the industry, making it challenging for customers to make informed decisions when choosing service providers. To address this challenge, the government should consider establishing a regulatory framework that can provide guidelines and standards for the FM industry, promoting transparency and ensuring high-quality service delivery.

A third challenge is the inadequate use of technology and data in FM operations. Many FM companies in Jordan still rely on manual processes and outdated technologies to manage their operations, resulting in inefficiencies and errors. Moreover, there is a lack of data-driven decision-making in the sector, with many service providers failing to collect and analyze data on their performance. This lack of data and analytics hinders the ability of FM companies to improve their operations and provide value to their customers. To address this challenge, FM companies should invest in modern technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) devices, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and analytics tools to optimize their operations and improve their service delivery.

Another hidden challenge in Jordan's FM sector is the insufficient attention paid to sustainability and environmental impact. Many FM companies in the country do not prioritize sustainable practices, such as energy efficiency and waste reduction, in their operations. This lack of emphasis on sustainability not only harms the environment but also results in higher costs for customers in the long run. To address this challenge, FM companies should prioritize sustainable practices and incorporate them into their operations. This can include initiatives such as energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems, waste reduction and recycling programs, and the use of renewable energy sources.

Finally, the FM sector in Jordan faces challenges related to the perception and awareness of the industry. Many organizations in the country still view FM as a cost center rather than a value-adding function, which can lead to underinvestment and undervaluation of the sector. Moreover, there is a lack of public awareness of the importance of FM in maintaining safe, healthy, and productive work environments, leading to a lack of demand for FM services. To address this challenge, FM companies should focus on educating the public about the critical role they play in ensuring safe and productive work environments. This can include initiatives such as social media campaigns, workshops, and seminars.
