Your journey as a woman in the cleaning industry
The cleaning industry has grown significantly in recent years, and the scope of the work has expanded to meet higher standards of hygiene. This has resulted in an increased demand for those knowledgeable of the latest cleaning technologies and the science behind them. Women tend to take this development seriously and often show a natural aptitude for the field, which has traditionally been seen as their métier. Women are respected as key contributors in this sector.
I have personally experienced no difficulties being a woman in the cleaning industry in India. When I moved to the UAE in 2007, I did not feel any discrimination as a female, although I was often the only woman in the management team. At the time, it was accepted that the housekeeping department was headed by women, though there were not many female cleaners available. Over time, changes began to occur, and now 30% of my staff are female, including Room Stylists and Supervisors.
Gender related challenges in your career
I am fortunate to have not faced any challenges in my workplace. I am an advocate for gender equality and believe that women can contribute the same amount as their male counterparts in both a vocal and professional manner.
It is encouraging to observe the growing presence of women in the cleaning industry, both in leadership roles and in general. I believe the traditional biases and prejudices are diminishing as new generations get involved and the industry better reflects the importance of merit, rather than gender.
As someone in a position of influence, I recognize the importance of being a role model and advocate for other women who are interested in pursuing careers in the hospitality industry. I believe that by creating opportunities and providing support, we can empower women to reach their fullest potential. As a leader, I strive to create an environment of respect and inclusivity among my team members.
Advice to young women who aspire to pursue a career in the cleaning industry
As women, it is natural to doubt our capabilities and question our abilities. It is important to remember that being a woman is a strength and our confidence, resilience, and determination to succeed can help us achieve our goals.
To grow professionally in the hospitality field, it is important to push yourself out of your comfort zone and advocate for yourself. Don't be afraid to make your voice heard, take on opportunities, and learn from any bumps in the road. It is also beneficial to build a professional network of colleagues and mentors who can provide guidance and motivation.
