Your journey as a woman in the cleaning industry
My journey was fairly straight forward after completing two years training in hospitality; I had the opportunity to work in either food & beverage, front office or housekeeping. I loved working in hospitality for 20 years before a career break to look after a family. It is Facilities Management that has given the most diverse rewarding opportunities the past 15 years and continues to do so.
Advice to young women who aspire to pursue a career in the cleaning industry
I faced discrimination about 25 years ago when I was informed by my line manager that the Executive Housekeepers role is “usually just somebody’s wife” It was a pivotal motivational moment to raise the profile of the role and live by the motto “That if someone tells you no, go ahead and do it anyway and make sure you take photos”.
Advice to young women who aspire to pursue a career in the cleaning industry
As the cleaning industry is seen as a female dominated industry, my advice would be to not limit oneself to a set career path. Acquire knowledge in your chosen field and never stop learning and be open to all opportunities that present themselves. Stand up for what you believe in, more importantly believe in yourself and never lose your passion.
