The food service industry plays a significant role in Qatar's economy and is a major contributor to its growing tourism sector. As such, the country has put in place stringent measures to ensure the highest standards of hygiene are maintained in food service establishments. From large restaurants to small cafes, food safety and hygiene are top priorities for both the government and consumers.
Implementation of HACCP
One of the key initiatives taken by the government of Qatar to promote food hygiene is the implementation of the HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) system. This system is based on a systematic and proactive approach to food safety that is used globally to prevent contamination and minimize food-borne illnesses. The HACCP system is mandatory for all food service establishments in Qatar, including those in the hotel, catering and food service industries. EMS is also used to keep a check on food and food handlers.
Food safety measures
In addition to the HACCP system, food service establishments in Qatar are also required to implement other food safety measures such as food storage, handling and preparation. These include the use of appropriate storage facilities to prevent cross-contamination, proper food handling procedures to prevent contamination and regular cleaning and sanitization of all food preparation areas.
PPE
Another important aspect of food service hygiene in Qatar is the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, aprons, and hairnets. Food service workers are required to wear PPE while handling food, which helps to minimize the risk of contamination.
Regular food safety inspections
Regular food safety inspections are also conducted in food service establishments in Qatar to ensure that hygiene standards are being maintained. During these inspections, food service establishments are checked for compliance with the HACCP system, as well as for other food safety measures such as temperature control and cross-contamination prevention. Any establishment found to be in violation of food safety standards may face fines or even closure.
Take the example of the FIFA World Cup 2022. Daily inspections were conducted in all food service establishments. It shows how the Qatar government takes care of human health safety.
Professional companies are contracted by food service establishments to ensure that their facilities are kept clean, hygienic, and free from contamination. This includes regular cleaning of all food preparation areas, as well as the use of appropriate cleaning and sanitizing agents to minimize the risk of food-borne illnesses.
In conclusion, food service hygiene in Qatar is of utmost importance, and the country has implemented several measures like Food Safety Program – EMS system ( Code of Practice by MoPH food safety guidelines), Water Safety by MoPH, Environmental Safety by MoPH, Qatar Clean Program for diseases and infections, etc. to ensure the highest standards are maintained. From the mandatory HACCP system to regular food safety inspections and internal Food Safety & Hygiene Managers, food service establishments in Qatar are committed to providing safe and hygienic food to its customers. With the support of the Qatar Cleaning industry, the country is well on its way to achieving its goal of maintaining a high level of food hygiene.
