Dubai Municipality has introduced a fleet of lightweight electric bikes to improve field cleaning operations and reduce the physical strain on sanitation workers during the UAE's peak summer months.
The electric bikes have been integrated into the municipality's residential cleaning operations, enabling sanitation teams to move more efficiently through neighbourhoods while collecting waste in hot and humid conditions. The initiative forms part of Dubai Municipality's broader strategy to modernise municipal services through sustainable and smart technologies.
Designed to enhance worker wellbeing alongside operational efficiency, each bike can travel at speeds of up to 45 km/h and operate for eight to 10 hours on a single charge, allowing teams to complete a full working day without the need for frequent recharging.
The bikes are equipped with waste collection containers ranging from 180 to 240 litres and can carry approximately 90 kg of waste, reducing the number of unloading trips required during cleaning rounds. Powered by 125Ah lithium-ion batteries, the vehicles are also expected to contribute to lower carbon emissions and improved air quality by replacing conventional collection methods in suitable locations.
According to Dubai Municipality, the initiative reflects its commitment to creating a safer and more comfortable working environment for frontline cleaning personnel while advancing the emirate's sustainability agenda. The deployment also supports Dubai's wider adoption of green technologies across public services and reinforces efforts to maintain high standards of urban cleanliness and public hygiene.
The municipality said it will continue investing in innovative solutions that improve the efficiency of cleaning operations, minimise environmental impact, and enhance the wellbeing of sanitation teams who play a vital role in keeping the city clean.
