Floor Care: Choosing the right cleaning solutions

Today there are significant trends that are revolutionising the floor care market be it a tech-savvy scrubber drier, an innovative floor mop or a cost effective and environment friendly cleaning solution. Hence, while selecting the right floor care products and equipment it is important to ensure that they are used safely and correctly for maximum impact. “There is no ‘one’ cleaning method that suits all types of flooring and if you try to practice that it will deteriorate the surface. For instance when it comes to multipurpose concentrate cleaners, the right one can make your floor shine while the wrong one can permanently damage it,” explains Meenakshi Sharma, Executive Housekeeper, Ramada Chelsea Hotel Al Barsha, Dubai.

“For wooden floors we use all-purpose cleaning chemical for regular cleaning that removes dust particles, dirt, etc. On the other hand for tiles we use all-purpose cleaning chemical along with weekly deep cleaning that helps to maintain the quality of the tiles. Marble, on the contrary, needs careful regular cleaning and weekly polishing to maintain its luxurious appeal,” informs Leelavath Nannuru, Executive Housekeeper, Le Meridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre. Sharma opines, “Avoid using acidic cleaners on floors including vinegar because it may turn your shiny floors into dull surfaces. Also, make sure that your cleaning solution is pH neutral.” Another challenge faced by most of the housekeepers is humidity. Due to humidity, porous marble especially found near a water fountain in the lobby areas tend to leave stain marks. “Using the right kind of cleaning chemical for stain removal will cost much lesser than replacing the marble,” says Sharma.

Most of the dust or dirt can be minimised by simply placing a mat at the entrance. Matting while preventing maximum dirt from accumulating act as a first line of defense. It can also be used as a transition to another space like a pool or gym area which is also prone to moisture. It can also prevent slip, trips and falls.

Floor care training

Lastly, while adhering to best floor care practices it is essential to train associates for correct handling of chemicals and cleaning tools. Along with following flooring manufacturers’ recommendations, regular inspections and maintenance of the floor goes a long way to maintain different types of floors in perfect conditions. Nannuru concludes, “We have monthly chemical training schedules in place carried out by our housekeeping trainer. Whenever a new chemical or new equipment has been introduced we do conduct training sessions for our associates along with one-to-one sessions carried out by supervisors and spot checks to ensure that associates are following proper usage of chemicals and equipment.”
