Linen Reuse and Recycling

Each and every hotel of the modern times boasts of being sustainable. Part of going sustainable is linen reuse and recycling. One of the popular reasons to have an effective Towel and linen programme in place is that it can dramatically reduce the impact of hotels on the environment by saving water, emissions of CO2 (from the energy consumed) detergent and the need for the associated waste water treatment and disposal.

Hotel guests are at a heightened understanding and awareness of environmental and social

responsibility issues over the past decade. Increasingly, they expect hotels to play their part in protecting the global and local environment and operate in a responsible manner and this includes linen reuse and recycling.

The environmental benefits of reducing resources and detergent include reducing costs. The savings can be used for further investment. Less frequent washing means less wear and tear which prolongs linen life. Housekeeping staff have more time to spend on tasks other than changing bedlinen and towels.

John Manohar, Cluster Director of Housekeeping, J5 HOTELS comments that the hospitality industry is increasingly recognizing the environmental impact of textile waste and the importance of sustainable practices. Linen reuse and recycling have emerged as pivotal strategies to mitigate waste and promote resource conservation. By reprocessing used linens into new, functional products, the industry is not only reducing waste but also conserving resources and lowering its carbon footprint.

Implementations in Linen Reuse and Recycling

Manohar further discusses the strategies aimed at extending the lifecycle of textile products. Key implementations include:

Circular Economy Models:

Creating closed-loop systems where linens are continuously repurposed rather than discarded, ensuring that resources are utilized efficiently.

Advanced Sorting and Processing:

Employing technology to sort and process used linens, maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of recycling efforts.

Strategic Partnerships:

Collaborating with organizations such as Dr. Linen and Rent a Towel to leverage expertise and resources in promoting sustainable linen management.

Awareness and Training:

Educating staff and guests on the benefits of linen reuse and recycling to build a culture of sustainability within the hospitality sector.

Achievements in Linen Recycling

International Housekeeping Week is an annual celebration that honors the vital role of housekeeping staff in maintaining sustainable and efficient operations in the hospitality industry. In 2022, this week-long event featured numerous activities and acknowledgments, emphasizing the importance of linen reuse and recycling. It served as a platform to showcase successful initiatives and share best practices across the industry.

J5 Hotels and the 360 Weave Initiative J5 Hotels has emerged as a leader in sustainable linen management. In October 2023, J5 Hotels was selected as one of the seven brands by Dr. Linen Sustainable Ventures FZCO to participate in a docuseries. This series, designed to demonstrate innovative recycling processes, highlighted the 360 Weave initiative—a comprehensive approach to linen recycling.

360 Weave Initiative

The 360 Weave initiative is a groundbreaking project by Dr. Linen Sustainable Ventures FZCO, aimed at demonstrating the complete lifecycle of recycled linens. The initiative involves several key stages:

Collection: Gathering used linens from participating hotels.

Sorting: Sorting linens based on their material and condition to ensure optimal recycling processes.

Recycling: Employing advanced technologies to transform old linens into new products.

Redistribution: Circulating the recycled products back to the hotels, creating a sustainable loop that reduces waste and conserves resources.

By participating in this initiative, J5 Hotels not only showcased their commitment to sustainability but also set a benchmark for other hotels to follow. The docuseries provided a detailed view of the recycling process, inspiring others in the industry to adopt similar practices.

The concerted efforts of industry leaders and innovative initiatives have significantly advanced linen reuse and recycling practices within the hospitality sector. Recognitions such as the Sustainable Initiatives 2022 award and the selection of J5 Hotels for the 360 Weave docuseries underscore the progress made in this area. Through continuous education, strategic partnerships, and technological advancements, the hospitality industry is poised to further enhance its sustainability efforts, contributing to a greener future for all.

Ibrahim Moawad, Director of Housekeeping, Director of Housekeeping, Swissôtel Makkah suggests that recycling and reusing hotel linens can significantly reduce waste and environmental impact. Here are some strategies and practices he believes hotels can adopt:

Reuse Strategies

  1. Linen Reuse Programs

   - Guest Participation: Encourage guests to reuse towels and bed linens during their stay. Provide informational cards in rooms explaining the environmental benefits.

   - Staff Training: Train housekeeping staff to only replace linens when necessary or as per guest requests.

  1. Maintenance and Repairs

   - Mending: Regularly mend small tears or damages to extend the lifespan of linens.

   - Repurposing: Convert old or slightly damaged linens into cleaning rags or donate them to animal shelters.

Recycling Strategies

  1. Partnership with Textile Recyclers:

   - Partner with companies that specialize in textile recycling to process linens that are no longer usable.

  1. Composting:

   - For natural fiber linens (like cotton or linen), consider composting them if they are beyond repair. Ensure they are free from synthetic materials and contaminants.

Sustainable Procurement

  1. Eco-friendly Materials:

   - Purchase linens made from organic or sustainable materials.

   - Choose suppliers that adhere to environmentally friendly practices.

  1. Linen Quality

   - Invest in higher-quality linens that have a longer lifespan to reduce the frequency of replacements.

 Waste Reduction

  1. Efficient Inventory Management

   - Implement an inventory management system to monitor linen usage and reduce overstocking.

  1. Donations*:

   - Donate gently used linens to shelters, charities, or community organizations.

Case Studies and Best Practices

  1. Green Key Global**:

   - Many hotels certified by Green Key Global follow stringent guidelines for linen reuse and recycling.

  1. Marriott’s Sustainability Programs**:

   - Marriott International has implemented extensive linen reuse programs across its properties to reduce water and energy consumption.

 Implementation Steps

  1. Assess Current Practices**: Evaluate current linen usage and waste to identify areas for improvement.
  2. Set Goals**: Define clear, achievable goals for reducing linen waste.
  3. Develop Policies**: Create policies for linen reuse and recycling, and communicate these to staff and guests.
  4. Monitor and Report**: Regularly monitor progress and report on the impact of the reuse and recycling initiatives.

By adopting these strategies, hotels can significantly reduce their environmental footprint while also potentially saving on costs associated with linen procurement and waste management.
