The fifth edition of the MECHF awards brought many amazing journeys of housekeepers to light the amazing work of seasoned housekeepers. But it was the only one that stood out and won the prestigious MECHF trophy. 

This month, we highlight the journey of Mr. John Manohar, Cluster Director of Housekeeping, J5 Hotels and the winner of The MECHF Best Hotel Housekeeper - UAE

  1. Tell us about your journey as a housekeeper

As a professional hotel housekeeper, my journey has been challenging yet rewarding. It requires a combination of attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to providing exceptional service to guests.

Throughout my career, I have worked in various hotel brands, starting as a Room Attendant, and working my way up to the position of a housekeeping supervisor, Executive Housekeeper and currently as Cluster Director of Housekeeping. Each experience in the career ladder has taught me something new and allowed me to develop my skills further.

In my role as a housekeeper and the Head of department, I am responsible for ensuring that guest rooms and common areas are clean, well-maintained, and equipped with all the necessary amenities. This requires me to work closely with other members of the hotel staff, such as maintenance personnel and front desk staff, to ensure that guests have a seamless and enjoyable stay.

One of the most significant challenges of being a housekeeper is managing a large workload and meeting strict deadlines while maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene. However, the satisfaction of seeing a guest's happy face and receiving positive feedback makes all the hard work worth it.

Overall, my journey as a housekeeper has been an enriching experience, and I am grateful for every opportunity I have had to develop my skills and contribute to the success of the hotels I have worked with.

  1. What makes the MECHF Award special for you?

2- Winning the Best Hotel Housekeeper MECHF Trophy in the UAE is undoubtedly a significant achievement and a moment of pride for any hospitality professional. The MECHF Award is a symbol of recognition for outstanding contributions and achievements in the hospitality industry, and it is regarded as one of the most prestigious awards in the region and for my professional experience.

What makes the MECHF Award special is its focus on excellence, attention to detail, and customer service. The award is not just about recognizing the hard work and dedication of hotel housekeepers, but also about acknowledging their ability to provide exceptional service that exceeds guest expectations.

For me, the MECHF Award would be special because it would represent the culmination of years of hard work, attention to detail, and commitment to providing exceptional service. It would be a validation of my skills and a testament to the value of my contributions to the hospitality industry. More importantly, it would be a true motivating factor and inspiration to continue striving for excellence and providing guests with the best possible experience in the days to come.

  1. What advice would you give to young housekeepers in order to succeed?

First and foremost, it is essential to understand that the role of a housekeeper is critical to the success of any hotel. Housekeepers are responsible for creating a clean and comfortable environment for guests, which is crucial for maintaining the hotel's reputation and guest satisfaction. Therefore, it is essential to take the job seriously and approach it with patience, passion, politeness, dedication and enthusiasm with a grounded attitude. 

One of the most important qualities for a successful housekeeper is attention to detail. Housekeeping involves many small but essential tasks that must be done correctly to ensure that guests have a comfortable stay. Therefore, it is important to pay close attention to even the smallest details, from dusting the top of the lampshades to ensuring that all towels are perfectly folded.

Another key quality for a successful housekeeper is time management. Housekeepers often have to clean a large number of rooms in a short period of time. Therefore, it is important to develop a system that allows you to manage your time efficiently and ensure that you meet all your deadlines.

One should have good communication skills and leadership attitude to work effectively with other members of the hotel staff, such as maintenance personnel and front desk staff. Good communication and teamwork are essential for ensuring that guests receive the best possible experience at the Hotel.

Finally, I would advise young housekeepers to be patient and persevere. Housekeeping can be a challenging job, but with hard work and dedication, it can also be incredibly rewarding. Keep a positive attitude, stay focused on your goals, and always strive for excellence, and success will follow. I waited for many years to take this award but I kept my skills growing all these years without losing perseverance. 

  1. What is the best part of your Job?

The best part of being a hotel housekeeper is the satisfaction of knowing that I have played an important role in ensuring that guests have a comfortable and enjoyable stay. As a housekeeper, I am responsible for creating a clean and well-maintained environment for guests, and their happiness and satisfaction are the ultimate reward for a job well done.

Another great aspect of being a housekeeper is the sense of accomplishment that comes with seeing the results of my hard work. Walking into a room that was once messy and disorganized and seeing it transformed into a clean and comfortable space is a rewarding experience.

Housekeeping also provides a great sense of camaraderie and teamwork. Housekeepers often work closely with other hotel staff, such as front desk agents and maintenance personnel, to ensure that guests have the best possible experience. This collaborative approach fosters a sense of unity and shared purpose among the staff.

Overall, the best part of being a hotel housekeeper is the sense of pride that comes with knowing that we have made a valuable contribution to the success of the hotel and the satisfaction of its guests. It is a challenging but highly rewarding profession that requires dedication, hard work, and a commitment to excellence.

  1. What is the secret behind your success?

One of the secrets to success as a hotel housekeeper is attention to detail. A successful housekeeper must have an eye for detail and ensure that every room is immaculately cleaned, with every item in its proper place.

Another key factor is time management skills. Housekeepers often have to manage a large workload, with many rooms to clean in a limited amount of time. Therefore, it is important to have excellent time management skills, the ability to prioritize tasks, and a systematic approach to work.

Flexibility is also a crucial attribute for successful housekeepers. Hotel housekeepers often have to work long and irregular hours, with a lot of physical demands, so being flexible and adaptable is essential.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also important for a housekeeper. They must be able to work effectively with other hotel staff, such as maintenance personnel, front desk staff, and supervisors, and be able to communicate effectively with guests.

Finally, it is essential to have a strong work ethic, be committed to providing exceptional service, and have a positive attitude. Successful housekeepers are passionate about their work, take pride in their accomplishments, and always strive for excellence.

In summary, attention to detail, time management, flexibility, communication skills, work ethic, and positive attitude are all essential qualities for success as a hotel housekeeper. These attributes, combined with hard work and dedication, can help a housekeeper to excel in their profession and achieve great success in the industry.

  1. What was the turning point in your career?

After the pandemic, the cleaning industry has become a new normal and the regulations to maintain cleanliness and hygiene have increased multi fold to keep the degree of satisfaction of the guests to be the highest. This has certainly increased the responsibility of the housekeeping department to move up the standards which was never felt in the past. Also, as an individual I have qualified myself to become a Health & Safety professional. 

Winning the MECHF Awards 2023 for Best Hotel Housekeeper UAE is a significant turning point in my housekeeper’s career. The award recognition provides a sense of validation and accomplishment, and it also opens up new opportunities for professional growth and advancement.

Winning the award leads to greater visibility and exposure within the industry. It also makes us more attractive to other hotels and hospitality organizations that are seeking top talent in the industry.

The recognition of the award  also provides opportunities to network with other industry professionals, attend conferences and events, and collaborate on projects with other experts in the field. This led to new insights, ideas, and strategies for improving housekeeping operations, as well as broader exposure to the latest trends and best practices in the industry.
