Sanitary disposal is a topic nobody wants to talk about. Over the years, women have been forced to cope with substandard facilities for an issue that requires discretion and cleanliness. But this age old problem now requires discussion, consideration and a 21st century solution for the comfort of women worldwide.
Dr Charles Gerbra of the University of Arizona conducted in-depth research into public restrooms and discovered that female washrooms were by far more contaminated with bacteria, mould and pathogens than men’s bathrooms.
The United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) report that 5.6 million employees in the United States are at risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens in the workplace. Not surprisingly, Dr Gerbra identifies the main offender for bacterial hot zones in washrooms as sanitary napkin disposals – ahead of the floor, the sink and the washroom doorknob.
Dr Gerbra also revealed that women spend twice as much time in the washroom as men – exposing themselves to even higher rates of crosscontamination. Bacteria and pathogens such as E. coli, salmonella, cryptosporidium and coliform that people are more likely to pick up through touching things in the bathroom with their hands.
These same microorganisms can also survive for months on sanitary disposal units unless regularly and properly sanitised. Throughout Europe, UK, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa sanitary waste disposal serviceand the provision of a sanitary disposal unit in each restroom cubicle is well entrenched as the accepted norm by employers and employees alike. The importance of providing sanitary units that are regularly cleaned, sanitised and hygienic through the use of a bactericide sanitising agent within the unit, is expected and demanded of hygiene companies or cleaners.
In the USA, sanitary disposal units are typically plastic or metal bins lined with plastic or wax paper bags that are emptied daily by janitorial cleaners. This current solution poses several problems – units that are not adequately cleaned and sanitised are unhygienic so therefore create a higher risk of exposure to harmful blood-borne pathogens, and they are probably not a facility women choose to use.
Before designing the SaniPod™ in 2000, Fumacare conducted research indicating there is a common perception that standard sanitary units are unclean and women only use them reluctantly. It was found that once sanitary units became marked or soiled, women refused to touch or use the units, forcing them to either flush dressings down toilets, carry their waste with them or dispose of them in regular waste receptacles.
Women that are forced to flush dressings down toilets will more than likely cause blockages resulting in costly plumbing and maintenance call-outs. From an environmental aspect, sanitary waste - tampons and napkins - that is flushed down toilets not only poses potential contamination but can overflow to enter and clog our water ways and
environment. Manual and pedal operated sanitary disposal units offer their own set of problems. Women are reluctant to handle a lid that has to be manually lifted as it increases the risk of cross-contamination even further by having to touch the same surface where waste is deposited. The introduction of pedal operated units is viewed as a ‘touch-free’ solution, however in reality they are very difficult for women to use while in a seated position and are impossible
for those with disabilities. Touch-free sanitary disposal units utilising infra-red technology offer women a first-class experience whereby the user can place her hand above or activate the sensor and the lid opens automatically, preventing the spread of cross-contamination and disease in the washroom.
