Cover Story: MT Khoory: Sons A legacy of safe-guarding the environment

Progress and development of a country is much desired. However, the flip side of a rapid rate of growth is the enormously burgeoning waste generated in the United Arab Emirates and the Middle East at large. Escalating waste generation opens up a plethora of issues to be tackled. These issues vis-à-vis environmental protection, sustainability and effective treatment of waste have far-reaching ramifications. In fact, providing a healthy and clean environment for the future generations is a challenge that the governments around the world need to address with a sense of immediacy.

 Mr Abdullah M.T.Khoory
 Director MT Khoory Group

Mohammed Tayyeb Khoory (MTK) group of companies stands committed to the cause of protecting the environment. The company’s diversified and versatile portfolio includes activities ranging from those related to engineering equipment, fire fighting, switch gear, automobiles, waste management, real estate, etc.
MT Khoory & Sons’ Waste Management Division is an integral part of the MTK group. The division specializes in the supply and installation of a wide range of waste management equipment which complements the government’s concerns on safeguarding the environment whilst working towards unprecedented advancement.

MT Khoory & Sons’ environment-friendly initiatives

MT Khoory & Sons participated in the Middle East Waste Summit (MEWS) 2010 this year with the objective of supporting the initiatives directed at more effective waste management by the Dubai Municipality. The Waste Summit held under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and Industry and Chairman of Dubai Municipality focused on the key issue of waste minimization and the related consequences thereof.

UAE has one of the highest rates of waste per capita globally. In such a scenario, it becomes imperative to work out an integrated waste management strategy which involves waste minimization, resource recovery, sound treatment and ultimately, safe disposal. Reduce, recycle and reuse ought to be the fulcrum of our resource management in the prevalent situation.

MT Khoory and Sons through its waste management division, reiterates its responsibility and commitment towards safeguarding the environment. It offers cutting edge technology and sustainable waste management products and services. The organization’s goal is to offer the society a healthier and cleaner environment by partnering with the government and private sector and offering the most efficient technology and methodologies in waste management.

MTK’s foray into sweepers is also an attempt to serve the society by bringing in the best sweeping technologies to the region through its partner, Faun, Germany. Faun sweepers were introduced during the Middle East Waste Summit 2010 by Dr. Armin Vogel, Managing Director, International Sales, Marketing, Partnerships, Faun Umwelttechnik GmbH & Co. KG.

A practical demonstration was conducted to the users of sweepers from the government and private sector.

“A sweeper normally emits a lot of emissions and blows dust into the atmosphere. The Faun ‘clean air’ sweeper will work well here in the Middle East even with the sand. It has an air recycling system and a 6 cubic metre hopper with a powerful suction nozzle. The air in circulation is guided back to the ventilator and not blown out, thereby preventing the cloud of dust behind the sweeper. The sweeper emits clean air. We can sweep dry and wet areas alike with this sweeper. With the water spray mechanism, too light a dirt particulate can also be swept effectively. The key factor is to put only the requisite amount of water, else the dirt will stick and smear the area,” explains Dr. Armin Vogel.
Faun develops sweeping machines to meet

every need- be it a street sweeping machine for daily work, an airport sweeping machine for keeping the take-off and landing runways clear or a maneuverable sweeping machine for smaller tasks. A Faun sweeper gives the complete solution to the problem of particulate matter with its patented re-circulating air technology. When this technology is combined with a unique filter system, it reduces the level of hazardous (PM 10) particles down to 2 percent i.e. 1/50

of that emitted into the outgoing air by conventional sweeper concepts. This implies that the air cleaned through the filter has a lower particulate matter content than the surrounding air in an average city.

“Faun-MTK has been one of the strategic partners of the waste collection sector over the past several years, supplying high quality refuse collection vehicles to Dubai Municipality and other important waste collection organizations in the government and private sector. With Faun and MTK’s collaborative efforts, we have inferred that prompt after-sales service is the most significant factor that determines the sustainability of such equipments in the market. To achieve the task of providing high quality service to our customers, a lot of training programmes including driver training have already been conducted. This focus on after-sales service boosts our confidence to venture into service intensive product groups like sweepers. We believe that our strategy to focus on training and after-sales service will enable us to make further inroads into the sweeper market,” comments Tariq Ibrahim, Sales Manager, Mohammed Tayyeb Khoory & Sons – Waste Management Division, Dubai.

He adds, “For years, we have supported the governments’ initiatives to deal effectually with the issue of waste management. We have identified that the waste cycle begins with waste disposal, proceeds to waste collection, tapers off with waste compaction and ends with waste treatment. MTK’s objective is to gain expertise in all the stages of the waste cycle and provide suitable technologies for our end users to achieve their objective of collecting and disposing waste cost-effectively.”

A firm commitment to effective waste management

To reinforce this commitment in conjunction with Dubai Municipality, Abdulla M.T. Khoory, Director, MT Khoory & Sons handed over 20 cbm Werner Weber compactors to Eng. Hassan Makki, Director, Waste Management Department, Dubai Municipality during the Waste Summit this year. MTK was awarded the contract for supplying 20cbm wet waste compactors to Dubai Municipality.

These compactors are primarily used in areas that generate large quantities of wet waste including vegetable markets, shopping areas and so on. MTK has supplied several Werner Weber compactors in UAE and Oman and the customer segments include vegetable and fruit markets, government departments, municipalities, hypermarkets, restaurants, hotels, residential towers and shopping centers.

Some of the major brands MTK represents include IVB, Germany for metallic refuse containers; Plastic Omnium, France for plastic refuse containers; Werner Weber, Austria for portable and static compactors; Orwak, Sweden for balers; Faun, Germany for refuse collection vehicles and suction sweepers; Bio strada, Italy for mechanical sweepers, Nilfisk, Denmark for sweepers; Ecologia, Italy for underground waste collection systems and Wilkinson Hi-rise, USA for Garbage chute systems- to name a few.

MT Khoory’s vision is to nurture a world with a healthy environment, which basically refers to sustainable growth. Such an objective involves processes which are environmentally secure, cost-effective and those practices which maximize capacity and operational efficiencies. “With our exhaustive waste management product portfolio and the support of all our trade partners, MTK is well-versed to always contribute efficiently to the best waste management practices in the region. We understand that waste management is the elementary requirement of an ecologically sustainable development,” concludes Tariq Ibrahim.
