Consumer’s Response is based on this simple question, “Which cleaning/washroom hygiene product do you find most useful?” In this issue, Dilki Cooray, Director of Housekeeping, Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek, talks about the Towel Master from Intercare. We highlight the usefulness of this product through a Q&A, presented below.
How does the Towel Master maintain the standard of hygiene in the washrooms of the Radisson Blu hotel?
It helps keep the washrooms dry. If the washrooms are manned at all times and consistently cleaned as per the international cleaning standards, you can maintain a hygienic washroom quite easily. The floors have to be kept dry using a dry mop to prevent any accidents as a result of wet hands being wrung all over the place. However, users do dry their hands on the Towel Master which reduces the occurrence of wet floors as opposed to a hot air dryer, which is used less frequently by guests.
Is Intercare’s Towel Master a hygienic way of drying hands? It definitely is a hygienic way of drying hands. You can dry your hands using paper, linen and warm air; however, using linen is the best way to dry hands. The Towel Master releases 20 cm of clean towel every time a user pulls at it, while the used portion goes on a roller situated at the back of the linen cabinet.
Moreover, our supplier Intercare, collects the used towel rolls from our premises and has them washed in a special laundry plant designed only for towel rolls. The towels are cleaned hygienically and sterilized as per medical standards to ensure that they are 100 percent bacteria-free for they remain totally untouched by hand.
What are the other benefits of using the Towel Master?
When the 40 metre linen roll is over, which gives about 200 wipes, you just replace it. It is environmentally-friendly as well for linen is washed and reused. Using cotton towels, keeps us is in line with the initiative of going green. With reference to the paper industry, a lot of trees need to be cut and water and chemicals are used to produce paper. Paper manufacturers are responsible for deforestation.
Linen does not have to be manned and there are no disposal problems with linen. In a washroom equipped with a paper towel dispenser, you will invariably find the bins overflowing with paper as guests do not limit themselves to pulling out paper as per their requirement. Moreover, the bin has to be manned.
How does the Towel Master score in terms of being cost-effective?
It is very cost effective. When a guest uses the Towel Master, he or she will pull once and it gets locked for a few seconds before you pull for the second time and therefore, you can have a controlled consumption. With paper, there is no control of usage. You also do not need storage space.
People tend to throw paper in the WC and as a paper towel does not disintegrate, it can clog the drain. Guests also need to carry paper in teir pockets to clean their cars and shoes, etc. With linen, there is no misuse.
How would you rate the product on a scale of 1 to 10?
I would have to give it a 10!
