Living in today’s indulgent yet economically strained circumstances, we cannot overlook the fundamentals of the waste hierarchy as well as adherence to the same. Waste-minimization followed by recycling top the process. Furthermore, many recyclers demand that the waste is sorted and compacted before it reaches their fold. Hence, Mil-tek balers/waste presses complete this jig-saw puzzle as they perform the task of sorting, baling and compaction of the waste, all in one go, before it can be suitably recycled.
The Mil-tek baler/waste presses are a range of products designed for the compaction and reduction of various types of waste such as cardboard, cartons, plastic, expandable polystyrene (EPS), plastic bottles, aluminium cans, tin cans, 200 litre drums and mixed waste i.e., garbage bags. Unlike conventional vertical waste presses found in the market, Mil-tek uses patented pneumatic technology to compact the waste. Mil-tek entered the Middle East market in 2006 and established its regional head quarters in Dubai.
The need for effective waste management in the Middle East
When organizations throw their waste into a skip without compacting it, they pay for a waste collector to take 80 percent air away. This spells doom for the environment and the companies, costing them their hard earned money. Instead if they sort, bale and recycle their waste, they contribute to the environmental cause and earn revenue on the baled waste. This could lead to dramatic reductions in waste to landfill, easing of HGVs (heavy goods vehicles) moving un-compacted waste around the road networks, local authorities’ dependence on manpower could also significantly reduce and ultimately, complement the United Arab Emirates’ initiatives in being the region’s leading nation in terms of responsible waste handling and recycling.
“Mil-tek owes its origin to Denmark since 1992. The CEO, Kristian Skannerup’s humble career beginnings at a supermarket gave birth to the idea of baling waste rather than sending waste to the landfills. The hydraulic balers used in the supermarket then were found wanting in terms of producing consistent end-products and the cost of the technology involved and its maintenance were high. Kristian was especially keen to have high standards of hygiene in the food related domains. Today, due to his relentless and conscious efforts, we have the Mil-tek balers,” says Mark Laird, managing director, Mil-tek Middle East LLC. He continues, “Due to our patented technology Mil-tek is prominently placed in the food industry. We can even install the balers in areas where food is being prepared or cooked, as the absence of hydraulic oils means there is no chance of contamination to the food.”
He adds, “Mil-tek is currently in 40 countries and is looking to expand in the USA and the Gulf region. We entered the UAE market while the market was still in its infancy. However, as the market has matured and intensified to the extent that UAE has the highest per capita waste generation in the world, environmental concerns have also risen. So as to provide service for the whole region, this year we have expanded our operations with exclusive distributors in Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”
Environomics: Environmental and economic benefits while handling waste efficiently Explains Darren Laird, GCC export sales executive, Mil-tek Middle East LLC, “We first educate our prospective customers by conducting site surveys, feasibility studies and showing them how much recyclers are willing to give them for their baled waste, and this we call as closing the loop. Waste is a commodity and baled waste is far more valuable than loose waste. We explain to them that by separating and baling your waste, we can increase your revenue.”
He substantiates, “In fact, we created the term, Environomics- handling waste in a way which adds value to the bottom-line, besides affecting the environment positively. It is all about having environmental and economic benefits. By separating and baling your waste, you are creating revenue. Generally, the perception is that anything to do with the environment will create a hole in your pocket; but that’s not the case here, it is quite the opposite.”
The technology utilized by these balers is only air operated energy. This leads to the compaction of the waste in an energy-efficient and much cleaner manner. The balers are run off a simple air compressor or air supply which can be found existing in many premises already. As the balers themselves have no electrical parts, they can be left in extreme temperatures, sandstorms or rain, undamaged. Sun or water does not spoil the baler. The machines can also be completely sprayed down with water and disinfectant, if required.
Mil-tek has an independently attested life cycle analysis conducted in Europe which shows that the Mil-tek balers have a minimum life cycle of 14 years. The balers have CE (European), GS (Independent German Standard) approval and the ISO14001 certification and are simple and safe to use.
Using the Mil-tek balers is simple and time efficient. The pressing cycle will not start until the door is completely closed activating the pneumatic valve. Once the cycle is complete (usually after 10 – 15 seconds), opening the door allows the pressing plate to return and the energy efficient springs double up as a safety feature that can be stopped by hand.
“Cardboard and paper is the major chunk in terms of the material that comes to us for compaction and recycling. Then we have PELD & PEHD plastics films, PET bottles, EPS insulation, and metal cans, as recyclable waste apart from mixed waste. Our balers have the potential to tackle all of these across industries. EPS for instance has a density of 5 kg per cubic metres and we make it into 250kg per cubic metres on compression and on melting, it can be used for making CDs and plastic stuff. This high level of compaction also makes it very attractive for recyclers,” says Asad Babar Aziz, sales manager, Mil-tek Middle East LLC.
He continues, “We have 17 models in the pneumatic range capable of serving the needs of a small retail outlet to a huge industrial set-up. We also have the MT electro-mechanical baler and the H600 Mill Sized Baler for maximizing transport efficiency either to paper mills or other countries.”
The 509 is the largest pneumatic unit in the world and has larger pistons, allowing possibly the best bales of plastic to be achieved. The 101 can crusher is quite popular as also the X-Press 100/200 for mixed waste. The waste can be put into the waste bags and then placed in the mobile X-Press wagon. Each wagon can take about 4 to 12 big garbage bags depending on the waste, which can be compressed and the wagons are ready to be used again. The MT range which Mil-tek also supplies is a range of electro-mechanical balers with a very powerful pressing plate that is used for PET bottles, aluminium cans and 200 liter drums.
Aziz further explains, “The balers are highly energy efficient because we make use of something called constant pressure. The Mil-tek balers keep constant pressure on the waste until the door is opened, ensuring it pushes every air pocket out of the plastic and breaks down all the corrugation in the cardboard. The technology also gives the balers a very fast cycle of approximately ten seconds. Mil-tek’s R&D department has recently secured a world patent on a new technology called the Eco-Drive. This enables the baler to use an artificial intelligence to measure waste resistance, i.e., crushing 2 boxes does not require the same energy as compacting 20 boxes. This reduces the energy consumption of the pneumatic balers by 44 percent on cardboard and 60 percent on plastic.”
Using clean compressed air technology allows the balers and compactors to be installed in areas where conventional hydraulic balers traditionally cannot go as with these there is no risk of oil leakage and contamination. Hotels, kitchens, galleys on ships and hospitals are just some of the industries that benefit from using such a clean technology in their operations.
The ground reality
“We reduce the waste volume by 90 percent in most cases. We then make them into blocks or bales. These can be stored in an established recycling point within a facility which requires limited space and then sent to the recyclers. This saves on transportation of huge waste volumes as also the storage issues and uses lesser cost and manpower. Customers are usually able to pay back their initial investment on the baler within seven months to a year, in some cases a lot less depending on quantities. We make it simple for our customers to recycle. We are a part of the solution of managing the waste,” says Mark Laird.
Speaking on the ecological conscience quotient, Darren Laird feels, “Some customers may take balers because it converts waste into a commodity while others are more conscious and subscribe to international standards and want to be careful with regard to the environment. Overall, the awareness levels are on the rise and the increasing demand for balers bears testimony to this fact.”
The Mil-tek team seemed unanimous as they felt that recession had perhaps, been a boom as it catapulted environmental consciousness to the next level, albeit spurred by economic circumstances. While stream lining the waste handling operations customers noticed how old practices were costing them money; Mil-tek showed them how to reverse the trend. In the last two years, Mil-tek initiated the rent2own concept wherein customers can rent the balers too. Subsequently, most of them land up purchasing the same.
“We do very quick free delivery and installation and provide a half day’s training to our customer.
We go back for the feedback. After-sales service and follow-up are a major part of our operations and we also do the consumables- i.e. providing the binding and manufacture the plastic bags too,” saysAziz.
Gulf Energy Maritime (GEM) is perhaps the Middle East’s largest independent commercial product tank operator. The feedback which Mil-tek received after supplying the model 102 baler was that the reduction of waste volume is up to 80 percent and is much easier to handle, the valuable on-board space easier to keep free and the waste that comes on-board is fully accounted for as required under MARPOL Annex 5 – Marine Pollution Act.
Barakat, a leading fresh fruits and vegetable processing trading chain in the GCC faced the issue of generating huge amounts of packaging waste which was taking up a large area in the operational facility. The loose waste was manually unfolded, which was consuming a lot of manpower and time. Removing the loose waste was also causing electrical power losses since the doors were opened and closed repeatedly. Mil-tek supplied them with a Model 509 baler.
Comments production manager Rakesh Kumar of Barakat Quality Plus, “Since the introduction of the Mil-tek baler we have created more space in the warehouse than we ever had before. We have reduced our labour costs, collections by 50 percent and increased revenue on our cartons. We have even noticed some unexpected benefits such as lower electricity costs because the cooler door is being opened less to bring the waste out.”
Sharing similar thoughts, Colin Duthie, HSE Manager, Al Ghurair Foods expresses, “The Mil-tek 1100 multi-waste baler is such a valuable asset to our operations; it is keeping our yard tidy and making money for us at the same time. The reduction in the oil cans is phenomenal; the machine can crush up to 18X30 litre cans in one press. The back-up service from the Mil-tek team has been first-rate, they are always available to help us out if required.”
With its growing clientele, Mil-tek seems to be on the mission of waste minimization and waste recycling. Apart from adapting the somewhat mundane task of waste management into a feasible option for the companies; it surely signifies a step forward towards effectual waste management which only heralds well for the environment and the quality of living.
