Dubai Municipality launches campaign to clean tanks and drinking water coolers

Category: Cleaning & Hygiene

The Food Control Department of Dubai Municipality organized a campaign to clean drinking water tanks and water coolers. The campaign which was sponsored by Magic Touch along with the support of Al Bayan and Al Shallal water companies had the same slogan as World Water Day, “clean water for a healthy world.”

“The campaign aims to increase public awareness by focusing on the importance of water and the need to protect its sources and preserve the safety of drinking water,” said Khalid Mohammed Sharif, Director of Food Control Department at the Municipality, adding that the campaign focuses on the cleanliness of water tanks, domestic water coolers, and public water vending places.

Sharif said that the aim of this campaign is to create an awareness among consumers regarding the importance of preserving the safety of water through the periodic cleaning of the tanks by using the services of cleaning companies approved by the Municipality as they comply with the required hygienic conditions.

“The Department has developed a comprehensive guide to cleaning of the tank as a first step, as listed among its most important strategic priorities as stated in the Local Order 11 of 2003, which has been applied to all food establishments and factories in the emirate,” said Sharif.
He emphasized the participation of the public and private sectors in maintaining the cleanliness of tanks present in their building premises by conducting periodic checks to make sure it was safe, structurally and hygienically.

“The consumer has a significant role in maintaining it as he should know the requirements that must be met regarding water tanks and coolers of drinking water and follow correct methods of conservation and storage. The Dubai Municipality is working to receive all communications and suggestions from the public to take the necessary action to ensure improvement and development to maintain the hygiene and safety of water as it is a shared responsibility which lies with everyone,” said Sharif.

He pointed out that the role of Food Control Department is to maintain the safety
of drinking water and approve cleaning companies that comply with the conditions to help in cleaning and taking samples for examination.
He stated that the Municipality will place the companies working in this area under strict monitoring through regular visits of departmental inspectors who will carry out inspections in factories, to ensure that the cleaning companies comply with the standards and send the water samples for laboratory tests.

The inspectors will make sure that these companies comply with packaging requirements for safe drinking water as it is necessary for all the water bottles to carry names and addresses of the company, which can be seen and read by consumers. It is also essential for companies to put new caps on all bottles with dates of production and expiry printed on them at the time of refilling. The caps should also be covered with another plastic wrapping that can be removed by the consumers whenever they want to open the bottles.

The campaign sponsor Magic Touch held a practical demonstration on how to clean household water coolers, in addition to distributing free sample products and educational brochures for cleaning domestic coolers.
